Biography:
David Strittmatter is a visiting assistant professor of public history and museum studies in the Department of History, Political Science, and Geography. He earned his doctoral degree from the University at Buffalo (SUNY), where he was broadly trained in European history. Prior to UB, Dr. Strittmatter worked three years for an education organization in South Florida and earned his Master’s degree from the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Originally from Iowa, Dr. Strittmatter spent his undergraduate years at Marquette University in Milwaukee.
Before joining the ONU faculty, Dr. Strittmatter taught at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. At W&J, he taught European survey courses, as well as World History through a thematic lens of memorialization and Europe since 1945. He is particularly interested in finding opportunities for students to engage with historical documents and artifacts, and assess history presented to public audiences.
Dr. Strittmatter’s research focuses on the development of heritage sites and the public memory of the events that occurred at these locations. His doctoral dissertation focused on sites in the United Kingdom—battlefields, political sites, and world’s fairgrounds—and engaged the intersection of commemoration, preservation, tourism, and urban planning. Strittmatter’s work traces how historical narratives and heritage sites evolve with the socio-political environment.
